Dry fine grinding: New solutions for the production of ultra-fine industrial mineral flours

- <1 µm: Hosokawa Alpine presents a new process in ultra-fine grinding

Regardless of whether ceramics, industrial minerals or metal oxides: the trend in the manufacture of mineral powders is towards ever finer products. With the PULVIS and the TDG, Hosokawa Alpine – a leading provider in the fields of powder & particle processing and film extrusion – presents two innovative mills laid out especially for the ultrafine dry grinding of industrial mineral powders down to less than 1 µm.

Alpine PULVIS: the energy-optimised grinding system

"The comminution of solids is extremely energy-intensive. With the dry ultrafine grinding process, Hosokawa Alpine has developed an economically efficient process which makes higher throughput rates at simultaneously low specific energy consumption possible", says Paul Woodward, Operations Director of the Minerals & Metals Division at Hosokawa Alpine.

The PULVIS is a combination of a vertical agitated media mill with integrated high-performance classifier. Dependent on individual requirements, the mill can be equipped with different classifiers.

As a result of the consistently implemented wear protection, the mill is optimally laid out for the low-friction ultrafine grinding of hard, abrasive and temperature-sensitive materials. In comparison to wet grinding, this achieves a much steeper particle size distribution with a sharply defined top cut.

Maximum fineness values: Alpine TDG sets new standards

The TDG is a fluidised bed opposed jet mill with two fines discharges installed in the classifier head, which substantially reduces the pressure drop for the classification. The mill is extremely flexible and permits the manufacture of coarse and superfine products down to a fineness range of less than 1 µm. At the same time, the particle shape remains intact – even with the finest products. This is particularly noticeable through the high laminarity values, e.g. with talc. In addition, the compact design of the TDG makes for optimal space utilisation at a low space requirement.
